Halloween meme! from folks on DW, via [ profile] lady_ganesh and elsewhere.

Fic or Treat!
  • Leave a comment with a fandom, pairing, character and/or prompt.
  • Multiple requests are okay (but as options rather than a shopping list).
  • You will get something, either a fic or a treat!
  • For the purposes of this meme, Destruct-o Pup and assCat are totally a fandom. ^_~

Fics: Enough to tell a story, I promise you that much.
Treats: Pics! or links, or recs.

Talk to me, people! Even if we haven't chatted much in a while. Use this as an excuse to spam up my inbox! Please. It's lonely. :(

Ideal fandoms are probably Saiyuki... and um. er. Maybe Fringe? Well. >.> Let's say anything from my tags is fair game. (and yes, that includes origi-fic, too)

(Manually) cross-posted from DW. Read comment count comments at DW.

And I do recommend you check out the comments over there!

Treat! ( (right-click and save as - it's an mp3) ^_^

Thematically appropriate for Mushishi, I think, even if not directly related. ^_^ Hope you like.

I kinda want to see Tenpou or Kenren ( or both?) taking Goku trick-or-treating in some fashion - AU or in-canon, whatever works, and especially if they knock on Goujun's door. Or, alternately, anything with Tenpou and Goujun on a Halloweenish theme would be awesome.

It would also be cool to see what Nate and Tif might have done some Halloween a couple years or so before their current story, too.

Whatever inspires your muses the most. ^_^

"Trick or treat!"

Goujun looked down at the small figure in front of him. It was draped in a white sheet, with holes cut out for the eyes. Kenren slouched against the opposite wall, hands tucked into the pockets of a pair of navy-blue pants. Goujun was no expert on fashion from Below, but one inevitably learned such things when Tenpou took an interest in them, and thus he suspected that Kenren was in fact dressed as a naval officer.

"I beg your pardon?" he said to the small figure. Perhaps it was meant to be a ghost, or spirit of some sort.

"Trick or treat!" A plastic gourd-shaped basket was thrust toward him. When he didn't respond, the voice continued, "It's Hallowe'en. Ten-chan said it's a Festival. From Below."

Ah. That would explain it. Across the hall, Kenren slouched harder, cigarette smoke wreathing his head. He looked amused, but wary.

He suspected that Tenpou had quite intentionally 'forgotten' to brief him on this tradition and his intent to send Goku door-to-door. Presumably one would not normally be caught unawares. Yet the request was simple enough: he was meant to provide either a treat (presumably something to eat, knowing Goku's preferences), or play a trick on the ghost.

"A moment, please," he said, retreating into his rooms and closing the door behind him.

The item he sought was a shell from the deep ocean; so perfectly spherical it could nearly be mistaken for an enormous pearl, save for its hinge. Locating it, he opened it gently and placed an apple inside. Then he returned to the door and offered it to the ghost.

The basket was thrust at him again, so he placed it inside, atop an odd assortment of wrapped candies, fruit, a scrap of fabric, and a pair of rocks.

"Happy Hallowe'en!" the ghost chirped, bounding off down the hallway.

Kenren peeled himself off the wall, tipped his head in Goujun's direction, and sauntered after.

"Happy Hallowe'en," Goujun echoed, bemusedly.

*grin*grin*  This is just adorable, from Goku's oh-so-traditional costume to Goujun's just-roll-with-it response and the fact that he knows Tenpou well enough to put together the pieces of this very odd situation.  Kenren is the perfect backdrop, too.  I really enjoyed this - thank you!  ^__^

Heh. Have had a DW acct for...awhile, now (you and I are mutually subscribed, even), just...haven't ever set it up sufficiently or taken the time to learn how to cross-post. ^_^; One day I'll get to it, along with...everything else I procrastinate. >_<

Tricky treat!

Goujun and that Confucian quote in the (hrmph) water picture-- The gentleman learns, whether he is studying or not studying, whether he is at rest or at play alike.

I have half an idea for this, and it's driving me a bit mad because I don't know what the other half is. >.> But it is definitely percolating.

There are koi in Kanzeon Bosatsu's viewing pond. They lounge beneath the lotus leaves, or swim in meandering patterns between them. At times, they disturb the view with ripples from their motion, or cast shadows with the translucent veils of their fins.

Kanzeon never rebukes them; never even comments on the blurring, shifting visions of the world Below. Se only watches. At times, Goujun has stood beside hir, watching as se watches, knowing he does not see what se sees.

To still waves on the Ocean would be to change the fundamental essence of the Ocean; so, too, he understands, to stop the koi would be to change the nature of the pond. But in the Ocean, he speaks the language of the waves, he knows how to see through what obscures others' vision.

He cannot see what the koi obscure.

"What do you see?" Kanzeon asks.

Part of his army is deployed Below. He had hoped to see their progress, to observe the challenges they faced, to see the face of their foe - this alleged monster youkai. But the koi are unhappy today; their restless motion has filled the pond with shadows and smears of light that resolve into nothing.

"Not what I had hoped," Goujun replies.

Taking a deep breath, he pushes the frustration from his mind. Non-attachment is a difficult thing for a dragon.

And in the silence that follows, in releasing the desire to know, he hears the koi speak. Swifter than thought, they tell each other tales of what passes Below. Their voices jumble over each other - each one distinct, each one a thread in a cacophonic melody of imperfect harmonies. Each swish of a fin, each ripple, each breath through their gills - it is all a part of the story. It is all a part of what se sees when se watches.

He understands: the pond is as vast as his Ocean, and no different. He has been trying to see through that which is part of the picture.

Kanzeon extends hir arm. Touches one fingertip to the water's surface. Hir bracelets chime softly. Everythings stills - the water, the koi, the very air. Goujun does not even dare to draw breath. Beneath hir finger, the view becomes stunningly clear, so precise one might believe one was present in the scene. A moment later, it has surpassed even clarity to become diamond-edged - a series of crystalline refractions. Every facet shows the scene from another angle; what might be, what is, what was, what never was, what ever will be.

Hir bracelets chime again as Kanzeon releases the view. The koi murmur to themselves as they wend their way beneath the lotus leaves.

Goujun exhales. Inhales. Closes his eyes, but sees only stars in an ocean of dark.

"What do you see?"

"Knowledge - too vast for understanding." Goujun looks at Kanzeon, sees mercy in hir smile as it is in hir nature.

Se rests one bare foot on the low rock wall of the pond. Dipping toes with brightly painted nails into the water, se makes hir own ripples.

"What you had hoped to see," Kanzeon says, hir voice so low he almost doesn't hear.

Between the ripples, he sees black-clad figures, an enormous beast the likes of which he has never encountered, and splashes of red, red blood.

Goujun sighs. A few moments later, he takes his leave.

He knows he will return to Kanzeon's pond, when once again he hopes to see.

This is really gorgeous. The voice and imagery and overall feel of it - I can't really articulate exactly what I so like about it, but it resonates strongly, and it's satisfying. ^_^

When I link to this and the trick-or-treat piece on [ profile] haku_ryuu, would you prefer the link go to AO3?

Ah, but that's assuming that you would get fic instead of treat! You never know! ;)
